Being a perfectionist is a part of being a musician. However, we are human, and mistakes can happen despite immense planning.
Gearing up for your show, you've likely practiced your setlist countless times and had everything mapped out. But what happens if, despite all of your preparation, you still manage to forget your lyrics while on stage? For most artists, this is the most humiliating thing that could happen. It makes the performer appear amateurish and causes them to become deeply discouraged.
While this is a horrible experience, there are several things you can do to lessen the blow if you forget your words on stage.
Suppose you fail to remember your lyrics, freestyle instead of stuttering while trying to remember. Just allow words to flow until you can recall the next lines. Your memory falling short can be unnerving, but you must keep the show going as a professional. Improvise!
Signal Your DJ to Switch Songs
Turn to your DJ and signal them to change songs immediately, especially if you have trouble freestyling your way through the brain fart. Moving on to the next record on the setlist keeps the concert flowing.
Apologize to the Audience
When all else fails, apologize to the crowd. Have a transparent moment. If people paid for a show, they would likely be upset if the artist they are seeing forgets their songs. Therefore, you want to make sure they know you are sincerely remorseful.
It may feel like the end of the world, but do not allow this to deter you from your dreams. If you do forget your lyrics, remember that it is simply a speedbump on your road to success!
