Rappers getting robbed is not a rare occurrence. Most times, there is no official investigation or repercussions for these pricey thefts. However, it looks like Safaree will be getting some justice in the 2018 robbery that left him shaken.
Tacuma Ashman of Irvington, New York, was found guilty of first-degree robbery, weapons possession, and resisting arrest. The crime occurred as Safaree was on his way to an interview with The Angie Martinez Show. Several men approached him and his friend with guns. They rummaged through his coat pockets, removing any valuables before ordering him face down on the ground. Despite the traumatizing event, he continued with the interview, which was filled with emotion as he recounted the near-death experience.
“I just got robbed. Two dudes with guns just ran up on me. Had me face down on the floor with a gun to my head. They just took everything,” he recounted hours after the incident.
During the investigation into the robbery, police ended up in a high-speed chase with suspects Jonathan Ricketts and Shawn Harewood. The suspects crashed their vehicle and were apprehended a short time later as they fled on foot. Ashman was arrested weeks later after his driver’s license, clothing he wore during the robbery, and cellphone was found in the wrecked car. Safaree’s wallet and jewelry were located as well.
Ashman faces 50 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for January 28th, 2022. A mistrial was declared in Harewood’s 2019 trial.
