After securing The Weeknd as Kanye West’s replacement, Coachella nearly lost another headliner after the singer demanded to be paid the same as West.
West was initially set to receive $8 million for his performance at the festival, plus another $500,000 for his production. However, after dropping out of the concert, Coachella was left scrambling for a filler act. They secured Swedish House Mafia and The Weeknd but nearly lost the “Earned It” star when they tried to pay him millions less than what Ye was receiving, according to Page Six. The singer threatened to walk away from the performance due to the pay dispute. With the thought of forfeiting yet another headliner, Coachella owner Phil Anschutz gave in and agreed to The Weeknd’s terms.
An anonymous source told the publication that even after The Weeknd was announced this week, he was still adamant about pulling out if he was not compensated fairly.
While there is no official word on why West decided against the festival, multiple reports have claimed he is taking time to focus on his mental health following his divorce from Kim Kardashian and several online rants.
Billie Eilish and Harry Styles will also headline the festival, which features performances from Doja Cat, Vince Staples, JID, and more.
Let's take a look back at The Weeknd's 2018 Coachella performance.
